William Louey

businessman and Philanthropist in Hong Kong

William Louey Lai Kuenis a Hong Kong–based businessman and philanthropist whose work and values have been shaped by curiosity, openness, and lived experience.

At 66, William is focused on sharing perspective rather than instruction. His approach is grounded in engaging with the world as it is — through people, beauty, craft, and everyday life — and in the belief that improvement comes not from optimisation or status, but from how one chooses to remain open and attentive over time.

This outlook has been shaped by a long arc of responsibility and continuity. William Louey is the fourth-generation steward of the family that built Kowloon Motor Bus, a company that has connected Hong Kong for more than a century. Having inherited, built upon, and evolved this responsibility, William Louey has seen first-hand what endures, what compounds, and what leadership looks like when measured across generations.

For more than 30 years, William Louey has supported the education of gifted young people through the William SD Louey Educational Foundation, established in 1995 in memory of his grandfather. Under his leadership, the Foundation has awarded scholarships and bursaries to 35 students to pursue studies in the US and the UK, representing a total investment of HKD $60 million. Over time, the Foundation has broadened its reach to support promising candidates from a wider range of countries.

William has explored his ideas more publicly through original video work, including Growing Young with William Loueyand Reaching Your Peak, as well as newer, informal on-location content. These films capture him engaging with subcultures, artisans, exhibitions, and everyday moments across Hong Kong. Across all formats, the emphasis is not on teaching or instruction, but on presence, curiosity, and lived experience.

William Louey is a member of the Forbes Business Council and a contributor to Entrepreneur.com, where he writes reflectively on leadership, experience, and the evolving relationship between culture, responsibility, and meaning.
